Get Charged!  Electricity and You is a new educational outreach program sponsored by KIUC in partnership with Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and Discovery Channel School, provider of educational materials to schools nationwide.

KIUC is meeting with interested Kauai schools to introduce the Get Charged! program to 7^th graders this school year.  Get Charged! provides basic information about electricity, how it works and how to use it.  It gives the user a real-world understanding of the power and purpose of electricity, as well as the importance of electric cooperatives in delivering electricity, which is integral to everyday life.

The program will provide a variety of educational tools including videos, CD-ROMs, a Teachers Resource Guide, student activity books and other collateral materials at no charge.

Combining Discovery Channel School’s Get Charged! curriculum kits with Touchstone Energy co-ops’ branding efforts, local electric co-ops can now provide the tools educators need to teach middle/junior high school students about electricity.  This initiative provides a vehicle for Touchstone Energy cooperatives to highlight their commitment to the communities they serve while providing an effective educational program about electricity and rural electrification.  This program is available for Touchstone Energy cooperatives only.

Discovery Channel School products have been developed by the world’s most respected brand for television quality and recognized by leading educational groups for their excellence.  Drawing on Discovery’s award-winning programming for much of its content, the curriculum and materials used in the Get Charged! program were developed specifically by Discovery Channel School for classroom use and comply with National Science Education Standards.  The Get Charged! program represents a first-time partnership for Discovery with a non-educational entity to provide content directly to schools.
