The ZAPS Program

KIUC went to Kauai teacher Traci Sullivan in 2008 and asked her to create a program to help Kaua‘i kids learn more about issues related to energy, electricity and sustainability. With some hard work and a fair amount of head-scratching, we developed an energy curriculum that would address the following concepts: “What is Energy,” “Forms and Transformations of Energy,” “The Energy Problem,” “Energy Choices,” “Energy Efficiency” and “Renewable Forms of Energy. As if it wasn’t challenging enough, all this was going to be crammed into two weeks—and even more, it was going to be taught over the summer. Only one thing to do, “We had to make it FUN!”

Now in it's second year, the pilot will train teachers along with the kids. 2010 is going to be another great year of  energy games, hydrogen cars, LEGO windmills, Power Plant tours, and much, much more. Students and teachers will work together, problem solve and draw their own conclusions about energy, how we use it and what our energy future might look like.
